The school

Breiðholtsskóli has about 370 students in grades 1-10 and 75 staff. The school is in the heart of the Breiðholt neighborhood, with a good outdoor swimming pool and large gymnasium nearby. Everyone's success is a priority and the guiding principles for our daily activities are responsibility, trust, and consideration. Our school prides itself on its diverse community of students, parents, and staff members.
Students at Breiðholtsskóli should thrive and have opportunities to fulfill their dreams. The implementation of Reykjavík City's Education Policy through 2030 is in full swing. In recent years, we have focused on creativity, social skills, self-empowerment and literacy. School activities
Primary school meals
School meals are free for the 2025-2026 school year. However, the school still needs to track information about allergies and intolerances and limit food waste. Students must register for the school lunch program as before.
Students registered last year will be automatically enrolled. Others need to register. Change the registration at matur.vala.is.

Parent cooperation
We are all in this together, and as the proverb goes it takes a village to raise a child. Reykjavík City schools make targeted efforts to consult with parents and enhance their involvement in schooling. All schools in Reykjavík City have an active parent association.

Breiðholtsskóli Student Council
Breiðholtsskóli has a student council or youth council. The student council addresses social, interest, and welfare issues for students. All Breiðholtsskóli students are members. Two representatives are selected from each grade level in grades 1–10, regardless of gender. Students don't elect a chair or board but share responsibilities. Elections occur each August/September.
Students in grades 5–7 and grades 8–10 each select one representative to serve on the school council.
Absence notifications
Report student absences, such as illness, on Mentor as soon as possible. For illnesses lasting more than a day, notify daily. For leave requests, use the form on the school website in advance. For leaves longer than 2 days, parents must request in writing on a specific form and get principal approval. Parents are responsible for the student's education during this time.
Leaves longer than a week are considered temporary exemptions from school attendance. Apply using a special form on the school website. In such cases, the guardian meets with school administration and the homeroom teacher to discuss the application. The school reserves the right to deny the request if deemed necessary. Any disruption to the student's education is entirely the parents'/guardians' responsibility.
Assessment of school operations
The goal of assessing and monitoring quality is to provide insight into schooling, its outcomes, and its development.
School districts
There are several school districts in Reykjavík and each child has priority in their district school. Nevertheless, all parents have the choice to apply to any school in the city for their children according to the rules on school districts, applications, and admission. Here is information on which streets belong to Breiðholtsskóli's school district.
